In celebration of the rich industrial heritage of Bristol’s harbourside, this lamp is inspired by the innovative Fairbairn Steam Crane, one of Bristol Museums’ working exhibits and the only surviving steam powered crane of its type. The lamp was designed and made especially for exhibiting in the Bristol Museum ‘Make Space’ during the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize Exhibition, July to September 2018.
The Fairbairn lamp is made of Solid Olive Ash with a grey patterned cable to suggest the lifting chains of the actual crane. The windows are created by chiselling window panes into the main body of the crane and then filling with resin, which is sanded off to give a smooth finish. The vintage style LED light bulb, acting as the crane’s payload, has very low wattage and therefore remains cool to the touch.
This is a one-of-a-kind lamp and is now available for purchase. Please email me or call me if you are interested in buying it. Approximate dimensions overall are: 50cm long, 20cm wide and 40cm high.
